You know what? It sounds like your feeling left out and black folks or any other race for that matter would care one bit if all you white folks out there did have your own lil diddy...lol. In fact a few might even encourage it. The only reason we as a people do this sort of thing is because we were allowed to keep only a few of our own African customs that we were stripped of...why don't ask Jewish people why the have Bar Mitzvah's....Duhhh!!

Unfortunately there have been many "white American" functions that non-whites were not permitted to attend throughout American history, which was probably the catalyst for minority groups holding their own similar functions. I think it's easy for individuals such as yourself to put a negative spin on situations like the ball you referred to, rather than looking at the historical context that instigated minority groups to create their own social functions in the first place.
This is not to say that holding exclusionary social functions is an appropriate or positive thing to do, but I highly doubt you would be banned from such an event for no other reason than your being white.

What if you're a white person from South Africa originally and emigrated to the US. Would that make you an African American thus able to go to the ball?

Missy Sue, wake up! These balls happened amongst all sorts of cultures and just because you're not invited does not mean the world is coming to an end. It happens, so get over it and throw yourself a ball and invite whomever you wish!
Callow, learn your geographical information. Africa is NOT all black - there are other cultures living in Africa that do not fall under the "black" race.

I have a white friend who was born in South Africa. Can't get more African than that. But interesting question. I want to see what "african americans" have to say about it. Just curious.

There is a sign stating NO WHITES!!! Or do you think you cannot go because they eyeball you funny?
Well, I guess I would feel about the all white scenerio the way I feel about country clubs that are all white. LEGALLY so. It sucks but if the government ain't funding it, I can picket or I can join Donald Trump's club instead.

I knew a white woman who was born in S. Africa. She would be African-American. BTW: Her name was Jamima.

Lets just let everybody have a ball whoever they may be. When we have our annual banquet and ball here, all people are welcome whoever you are. I will bet the same for the ball in your area. Just ask if you really want to go.

"White" is too broad of a category in any case.
Perhaps, you can go to a ball that caters for your ancestors' cultural group? Eg, Irish, Scots, Russian, German etc.....
