My professor's name is Phuong Thanh, is this a girl's name or a boy's name?

Interesting question. "Phuong" itself can be a girl's or a boy's name. "Thanh" can also be a boy's or a girl's name. However "Phuong Thanh" is most likely a girl's name. Isn't the Vietnamese language/name strange? :-)

In this case many Vietname folks would associate this name with a contemporary famous female singer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phuong_Thanh, so I'd say your professor is a lady.

My wife is Vietnamese and she says it mostly used as a girl's name but there are still plenty of boys names that also. From personal experience (I work with and know a lot of Vietnamese), I know about 4 Phuong's (girls) and I know 2 Thanh's (1 boy & 1 girl). In answer to your question, I think it can go either one way or the other.

It is harder to figure out since all the accent sign are left out (we have 6 signs to set tone accent, on the same word with different sign on means different thing). If Phuong Thanh is just the first and middle name put together to become one first name, it is deffinitly a girl's name. If Phuong is first and Thanh is last name, then it can be both for girl and boy's. Why don't you ask how are you going to salute him or her with....Mr or Miss or Mrs...etc.

Phuong is a girl's name. Thanh could be either boy or girl.

In the Vietnamese language, you can tell if they are a boy or girl by the middle name.

A name like Le Tan Dung is a male name. The name Tan shows that he is male.

Another name like Phung Thi Chinh is a female name. The name Thi show that she is female.
