This "headache" is costing money but I am not resolving problems. It has needed a water pump every year for the last 3 years. Then in july it started "stumbling "when being driven.it died and shop said it needed a fuel pump. Then in september it just wouldn't start,no inkling that I had a problem.Shop said it needed a battery,in october the battery gauge showed I was having problem with charging.Keeps charge at high idle.So shop said needs alternator.Put in alternator, car was fine.Without warning the gauge shows charging problems again.Could the gauge be faulty or is it a problem in the electrical system.I'm tired of just replacing parts and not resolving the problem. This car should have come with a supply of headahe medication!!!It still "stumbles" occasionally when driving.Any ideas?????

Replacement of the cables both positive and negative. This should resolve your issue. There is also a concern about where the shop got the replacement alternator. It was likely a remanufactured Alternator and it could still have a problem. I would have the Alternator tested by a local auto parts store. If found to be defective take it back to the shop. You should have a warranty on it and they should not charge you for the swap. Also did they change the belts when they put the new Alternator in? If not I would have it replaced. If your water pump has been leaking the belt is most likely soaked with Antifreeze and is not providing enough grip to turn the alternator so it can put a proper charge on the battery. You have to have the water pump fixed. These should resolve your issue.

With repetitive battery related problems like you've had, the next
thing I'd be suspicious of is the battery leads. In particular at it's
age I'd be checking the negative lead connection to the block.
Loose or corroded connections will cause charging and starting problems,

definitely inspect the cables, they can corrode internally inside and be green all the way from end to end, have seen it happen often, try cleaning all connections at the battery and such, they all have to be clean and dry

if not then try new cables

good luck
