The children in grade school in The 20th. and early 21st. century didn't have much paper , let alone any to waste. Paper used in school was always used on both sides, and never wasted. Paper was passed out and collected by the teacher. At Holiday time colored construction or paper colored with crayons when available would be cut up for decorations to be brought home ,some as greeting cards, some for hanging chains on the X-mas tree.
