Why: Ideally, it's because they love one another and want to make a lifelong commitment. Other reasons are money, pregnancy, arranged marriage, and feeling pressured to do so (by society, parents, significant other, etc.)

Important: Only if you KNOW you want to do it. Marriage should be a lifelong commitment. It is a contract that says you will try to weather all storms together. (Granted, if it REALLY isn't working then divorce.) Many believe that they can stay in a lifelong commited relationship without marriage. This is true. But, there are drawbacks. There is no guarantee that you can visit one another in the hospital. There are no tax benefits (in the USA, other countries have common law marriage). If one dies, it is easy for the family to take all of their assets and leave the partner with nothing--even with a will.

Marriage is not for everyone. It is not meant to be entered lightly.

In a world where people are created equal and no one cheats and there's justice for all, people marry for love.

In the real world, marriage is a contract between two consenting adults (in most states and countries- between a man and woman) and the state for state regulated sex, property management, and having a way to track the legitimacy of children.

Marriage is also a religious right allowing a man and woman to procreate and live together without the burden of guilt or sinning in the eyes of God.
