It's good. It's free. Allow it to download updates and it will protect you against currently known viruses. I use it and I have been happy with it. I also use several other antivirus and spyware programs in addition to a firewall -- so it depends upon your desired level of security really. Avast's AntiVir works well, though. (I also use: AdAware, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, and ZoneAlarm plus every now and then I perform an online diagnostic test with PandaSoft or PC Pitstop).

Avast is BETTER than Norton, McAfee, and many others.
I've tried all. I've remained with AVAST for 3 years and am very happy.
It is unique in that it STOPS a virus from complete downloading, and instantly alerts you with a siren...
totally gets your attention.
Then just selelct DELETE
Have even used Limewire, with confidence that Avast will arrest any virus attempts, and it has 100%
You also would be wise to use two more tools that do not run all the time, but you should run them
about once a week if you SURF the net a lot.
here you go:
Get Ad-AWARE spy-removal tool from Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.
AND
Get anti-hijacking tool
called HiJack This
for any hijack problems you might encounter Get this FREE anti-Hijack software
1. The program is called HiJackThis 1.99
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
2. Download and run the program
BE CAREFUL what you delete,
from it's findings...because
it will find the offending program
and others that you may NOT want to delete.
Only delete the one that hijacked you.
3. Reset your home page
a. Surf to your homepage of choice
b. In Internet Explorer above click TOOLS > Internet Options > click button USE CURRENT.

It's free Antivirus scanner, it's not bad but there's a better one. Avast has a higher virus detection rate than AVG but it also a resources hog---slow down your pc. Believe me, i've tried just about every free scanners under the sun and this is i what i have in my PC now : http://www.free-av.com/ Try it and if you don't like you can uninstall it later. It has a better detection rate than AVG or AVAST and does take much memory to run.

It protects you against viruses just like McAfee does, but it bogs down your system with a lot less junk. The detection rate is a little lower than McAfee, but its free and your system will run faster with it instead of McAfee.
