Hey,
staying in Venice is really really expensive. I suggest you to stay in Treviso. Treviso is a very beautiful city (and romantic) close enough to Venice, about 30 minutes by train.
There is no need for renting a car in Venice. Trains are very helpful and offering good services.
Happy traveling!

Here's the deal. If you have enough money to go to Italy on your honeymoon, then you should stay in Venice. What's the point? There are nice 2 and 3 start hotels that are affordable. It's so nice to walk around the city at night. It's safe and so beautiful. Look on venere.com

My husband and I stayed at the Baglioni hotel in April... It is literally 20 steps away from St Mark's square on one side and 30 steps away from a main vaporetto (water bus) stop on the other. It also has a private water jetty where you can arrive outside the entrance by water taxi... or take a romantic gondola ride. Having said that it is so close to the action, inside the hotel is a calm haven and you wouldn't know you were so near the crowds - it was wonderful! Our room looked out over St Mark's Gardens and the Grand Canal to the right and was absolutely beautiful! It was certainly expensive, but cheaper rooms are available without the canal view... and let's face it, Venice IS expensive!

When we went to Venice we stayed in Vicenza...Which is about a 30 minute drive from Venice. Driving into Venice is very easy and you can park at the Tronchetto parking lot. Then catch the Vaporetto into town. Buy your tickets at the tobbachi shop on your way to the vaporetto (city buses which are boats). A really good travel book that we used is Rick Steves Italy....VERY informative. Have a blast we loved Venezia!!

Try the Holiday Inn Express in Quarto d'Altino which is out side of Venice. Parking will be free - don't take your car to Venice, just take the train. There are two HIE in Quarto. Either one is fine. One their website they often have specials for 65 Euro or so.

Hi, I am from Venice and I suggest you to take an Hotel right there. You will pay more but it will be more easy and comfortable to see the city.
Mestre it's OK to stay but remember that from 12.30 p.m. you have only 1 bus at hours to return to your hotel....
