Yes she has too otherwise her immune system will attack the baby and cause a misscarrige. The body treats the baby like an infection...tell her to get the shot it's for her own good.

She has to get the shot. I am Rh- so I have been through this with both my pregnancies. Because she is Rh-, her body would build up antibodies against an Rh+ baby and could cause a miscarriage. Generally in the first pregnancy, it is unlikely to cause a miscarriage but if she ever gets pregnant again it can cause some significant problems if she doesn't get it. She will not only need to get one prior to hitting 28 weeks but she will need to get another one after the baby is born. It really is not that bad of a shot. Yes it does sting (and yes it is in the butt) but it is necessary to protect your baby and future baby.

If her partner has positive blood type, then she will have to get the shot -- UNLESS this is her first pregnancy. That includes all pregnancies that may have ended in abortion or miscarriage. I would get the shot just to be safe.
Babies can die from Hemolytic disease, which is when antibodies can develop in the mother that can cause her to "reject" the fetus. These antibodies pass through the placenta and can cause enlarged liver, heart, spleen, and fluid build-up in the stomach.
She should also plan on getting another shot immediately after giving birth to protect herself and her child in subsequent pregnancies.
Ask her to try to find a thimerosol-free version of the Rh shot.
Here is more information on the shot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rho%28D%29_Immune_Globulin
There are links on the wikipedia site for her to do further research.

Because you are rh - you don't have any positive antibodies...if your blood and the baby's blood mix in the umbilical cord and your baby is a positive...your blood will treat the baby as a infection and attack the fetus...probably resulting in a miscarriage. You also geta shot within 72 hours of delivering...they test the baby's blood and if its a positive you get another shot of rhogam. If there is ever any bleeding in the pregnancy you need to get a shot also. If it turns out that the baby is negative like the mother then it wouldn't have been a problem.

If the baby's father has a positive blood type, then yes, she needs the shot. If you don't know the baby's father's blood type, then yes, she still needs the shot. If the father's blood type is also negative (you must be absolutely sure about this), then no, she probably wouldn't need the shot.
By the way, if the baby's blood type is +, she'll need a shot after birth too.

I had to get the same shot and yes she has to. If not her body will fight the baby as if it were a virus and it would lead to a miscarriage. I wanted to know the same thing when I had to get it. But it is a very important shot especially if the babys mother and father have different blood types.

if she doesn't get the shot and her baby is rh+ then she will reject any future pregnancies that are rh+... she really does need to get it. its not that bad, they do it in your butt.... and she should speak to her docter more about this if she is confused. they can explain it further....
