I am currently attending a CC and am looking to get into a top business school, preferably NYU. My GPA is about a 3.86, however I do not have the strongest HS scores. I am looking to attend during the summer of '08 so I still have time to make my GPA stronger. I have done some community service and will do more during the summer.

Do I have a chance of getting in? Can I do anything to make my application stronger aside from what I am doing now. I also work full time so it is difficult for me to be involved in school activities.

I am dying to get in!! Please help!!

I wouldn't worry about the HS grades. Your GPA from the CC will outweigh that. You don't mention SATs. 75% of NYU students have 1310 or higher.

Many top private universities don't take many transfer students. Some of those that do tend to take them from good schools that don't have certain programs. For example, Harvard only accepts 30-75 transfer students per year. Many come from top Liberal Arts colleges that don't have limited offerings (e.g., no engineering school, etc).

NYU certainly accepts more transfer students than most of the Ivies -- and may be more ameniable to accepting someone from a community college.

Go for it & good luck. But have a backup plan.

In Michigan, your CC grades as well as all your credits transfer to any big 4-year State college (even University of Michigan). That means that, at least in theory, the courses at the CC are as good as U of M.

I'm thinking that your 3.86 in the CC speaks volumes, loud enough to drown out what you did in HS. That proves that you're Dean's List material in college, and if NY is like Michigan, then you'd have done the same work at NYU (or and of the SUNY branches).

Congrats!!!
