Perhaps the germination was the creation of the French Indochina Colonies in the 1800s. Perhaps it started with the Nationalist movements of the 1920s and 30s, which brought communism into popularity. Perhaps it was a result of World War II, where the Vietnamese fought the Japanese to a stalemate.
Most people think it began after the Vietnamese defeated the French in 1954, and the USA, fearing communism, helped the UN partition Vietnam into North and South, like it had Korea.
Then, the USA created the South Vietnamese army, and used it to suppress pro-nationalism movements, like the Viet Cong (who called themselves the People's Liberation Army).
The first USA Troops went there in 1954 with the French. The combat advisers went in the late 50s. The US Military sent in Marines, Army, Air Force, and Navy in greater numbers every year beginning in 1958.
The US Officially declares that the War started in 1964. By then, the USA and South Vietnam were fighting against the North Vietnamese who were trying to liberate South Vietnam from the Americans and reunite the country under the communist government in the North.
What a mess, huh? Especially when you realize that the North Vietnamese communists had used the US constitution as a model for their own, and began their declaration of basic rights by quoting the Declaration of Independence, and often referred to Ho Chi Minh as George Washington, in his honor as the father of his country.
Ostensibly, we went into Vietnam to liberate an oppressed people, to stop a communist dictator, and to bring democracy to a foreign people (heard this before)?
It's a can of worms, and if your paper doesn't make logical sense, don't worry, you won't be the first.
