I don't know about highly addictive because I can stop anytime I want. Lol.
But what's not to like about knitting? It's relaxing, productive, fun, creative, comforting - I could go on.
There's something about the click of the needles, the texture of the yarn, the love that goes into each project. I too have been knitting since age 8 and I like that you can put it down (which I do more than I like because life seems so busy) and it's there waiting for you whenever you're ready.

I taught myself how to knit and I feel that it is very relaxing to do. However, I find that I don't have all the time in the world to knit as much as I care to (with homework and sports). I've tried to teach my friends how to knit but they became easily bored with it. I love nothing more than finding an adorable yarn on sale and getting some new needles to knit something with it. I can't wait for the breaks from school when I can knit without having to worry about getting other things done.
(Just past the milestone and knit my first sock. I'm so happy!)

I too learned to knit as a child and stopped until I was pregnant with my first child 24 years ago. Now I have an entire closet for my knitting stash and I always have a project or two going and am thinking about my next project while working on the one at hand. I like making baby things and giving them away to coworkers. I've tried knitting with wire, and other materials (arty kind of stuff) but resort back to using plain worsted weight yarns and doing my thing.

Knitting is addictive. The repetitive motion, the feeling of accomplishment, and the excitement of starting and/or finishing a project all contribute. It is relaxing and you can feel the stress just leaving your body when you are in a knitting rhythm. I also like it because it is something I can do when I am traveling and still have a conversation with another person.

I think so. I love knitting so much. Because I can always made up a new stype of anything (like scarft). Knitting also a little essay to learn. But I have to put the needles down because I don't have all the time in the world to knit. You know what I mean.

I agree with what Wander, Wonder and Rezoob said -- I think it might have something to do with the repetitive motion, and the slow but steady rate of reward (seeing your project slowly grow). It reminds me of how I feel when I am eating a pomegranate -- little rewards for each repetitive motion, and it feels hard to stop. I am a third-grade teacher, and I have taught girls and boys from 1st - 4th grade how to knit, and it seems they often feel the same way -- they just want to keep on knitting every chance they get.

I think it's the repetitive motion that's so soothing, kind of like rocking in a chair. It's nice to feel domestic sometimes, even if you're not. Besides, it's always exciting to have a new favorite obsession. At least you picked one that's healthy and won't kill your budget. I like knitting too - it's hard to put it down!

I love knitting, but I wouldn't say it's addictive.

yes i can relate to you,..i once stopped knitting before and just got back recently and i think the reason why you think its addicting is because we're amazed or proud of what we've accomplished...when i start on something i always make sure i get to finish it right away or i won't be able to sleep or do something..lol.....=P

It is and I think it helps me to not snack so much in the evenings. I get caught up in it and then don't realize how much time has gone by..plus I don't want to get my knitting dirty.
