My friends and I just rented a house that has two fireplaces, and we're wondering if anyone knows how much it costs to get an inspection and a cleaning if nescessary. Can they be separated, or are they just included in a package.

Also, since we're renting, is the landlord required to make sure the chimneys are in good, clean working order, or will we have to pay for it.

In maryland it is usually $100-$200. They are going to inspect as part of the cleaning. If the landlord won't pay to have it cleaned just mention that you will have fires in the fireplace regardless and if the soot buildup causes a fire then so what. He is the one who will have to pay for a new chimney or building. Seriously, it is part of the general building maintenance so he should pay for it.My family has always had fireplaces and we generally had fires a few nights a week for 3 months each year. sometimes we got the chimmenys swept each year and sometimes we skipped a year. If you really only plan to have a few fires(like less than 5 a year) then even if it is dirty you probably won't build up that much more soot to make it much worse.

Since you are renting, the landlord should have to pay for this upkeep. He may even do it himself.

If you have to hire this done, in my area, it generally runs around $90 for inspection and cleaning per chimney. A valid chimney sweep will automatically inspect as he is cleaning
