If taken literally, the statement can refer to genetics having a strong impact (the classic nature vs. nurture debate) on our actions. For example, successful parents are more likely to have successful children. Taken another way, past successes build confidence, self-efficacy and self-esteem, and our positive beliefs about our likelihood of success actually do make us more likely to be successful in the future.

Initial successes build self confidence and instill a desire for the accolades that further successes will bring...it also instills a proclivity to associate with others who succeed. This creates networks and business/science circles of a synergistic fashion. In other words, the successful persons 'feed' and 'nourish' one another's endeavors, creating even more successes (and much learning, in the successes).
