Rule of thumb is to throw away anything that you don't plan using in the next year. Throw away things you planned on getting fixed or take them to the shop immediately. Have a yard sale first and make some money!!

The best book that I have ever read on this subject is called "Lose 200 Pounds This Weekend" by Don Aslett. This book not only gives tactics for how to organize, but goes through categories such as sentimental items, magazines, clothes, etc etc etc and how to weed through things and get rid of them! The problem is organizing, it's having too much stuff. So whatever I do when I need to get inspired (because I'm definitely a pack rat as well) is read a chapter, and dig right on in and try to get rid of as much as I can. It's amazing how freeing it is to get rid of things, because I often sit there and think that I don't want to clean because I have TOO much stuff. Also, the more stuff you have the more time you have to spend moving it around to clean it, and the less time you have to do stuff that truly makes you happy!

Plus, one other major bonus with getting rid of things, besides freeing up your house and mind, is donating it to a worthy cause, like the Lupus Organization, The Salvation Army, or Goodwill. Or even sell it if you have the time at a garage sale, because the unreformed pack rats will swoop to your stuff, and that's money in your pocket!

So honestly, get inspired by reading this book, and start clearing that junk out! You'd be surprised at how you do not miss it at all, and how free you feel when you can see wall space and the floor again! Good luck!

Getting organized is about more than just having things clean and tidy. There are so many emotional issues involved that probably led to your problem in the first place. Believe me I know. Right now I am overwhelmed with clutter largely because 2 rooms of my home were destroyed by Katrina and everything we salvaged plus things that were donated to us while we were evacuated plus huge boxes of things that were delivered to the house a few weeks after the storm that was for my daughters business clients are all jammed into the rest of the house.
Every item that is thrown away has at least an hours discussion between my husband and I. I almost wish the storm had just taken everything. No discussion. No decisions.
I am now ready to hire a professional to just get it all done once and for all.

Throw away any clothes you haven't worn in a year, don't fit properly, severly out of date/fashion or you never liked. Don't keep things for sentimental reasons if you don't have the room (other than maybe a wedding dress or the clothes you brought your baby home from the hospital in). Try donating clothing and household items to the Salvation Army, etc who will gladly accept used goods, especially at this time of year.

Same goes for things you haven't used in a year, old toys or games will be more apprieciated by someone in need than collecting dust in your closet so give them away too.

If you love it: keep it. If it's part of a collection: keep it. If you have room and use for it: keep it. All else, get rid of.

And good advice was already given about tuning into HGTV or TLC or their websites as they both show numerous cleaning/organizing programs.

This is what I have been trying to do. I have been going through things and if I haven't used an item in this last year I am getting rid of it. I have three piles, things to donate, things to toss and things pack up and store away. I try to take the items that I want to donate to a second had store as soon as possible as I find myself taking things back. Its real easy to throw away the toss items. The items to be stored away are some times, time consuming as I find myself strolling down memory lane.
Good luck with your endeavor.

Don't keep anything that you don't find useful on a regular basis, or beautiful. If there are items you are undecided on throwing away- put them in a box, seal the box, and store it somewhere out of site-- if you haven't wanted or needed that item within a couple months, it's time to toss it. Getting organized and rid of unnecessary objects unclutters both your house and your mind--you'll feel so much better!
