Sustainability is an attempt to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future. It relates to the continuity of economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human society, as well as the non-human environment. It is intended to be a means of configuring civilization and human activity so that society, its members and its economies are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals in a very long term. Sustainability affects every level of organization, from the local neighborhood to the entire planet.

Sus as Politicians call it means exactly what is convenient at the time , a new Labour flexi word, a word with all meanings yet no meaning, a word to extend speeches without affecting their meaning. Sustainability should mean only doing that which can be done on a continuing basis, yet population growth is the major driver away from Sutainability so Immigration should be the first item on the agenda if sustainability is to be considered on a Country by Country basis, as a Countrys sustainability will be measured by the number of people that country can grow food and fuel for divided by the population, when that falls close to unity a cull is required, that great Green pioneer Mr Mugabe has proved populational culls can work so why not mas culls in the most unsustainable countries such as India Pakkistan and China using thermonuclear technology. The Bomb is the Green Answer.

Sustainability - in the context of "sustainable development", this means development that does not compromise the environment or resources for future generations.
Some people might argue that this is a contradiction in terms (sustainable forestry? sustainable mining? sustainable use of fossil fuels?). You can actually go a very long way with properly designed techniques for environmental mitigation to achieve sustainability, but some things will never actually be sustainable.
