When you can't go out you have to go up. What that means is use your wall space - put up shelves, buy tall bookcases etc. Pottery Barn has designs for small spaces. Get a catalog and copy what they have done only buy cheaper stuff if you're on a budget. Target sells a lot of "Pottery Barn" type stuff.

Less is more, definitely. If you have limited space, then everything in it needs to serve an important function in the room. So if the room is full of stuff, pare it down to what is necessary in there.

Choose furniture pieces that do double duty or convert to do more than one thing. Beds that have drawers underneath. Seating with storage underneath. Shelves with hooks underneath. Step ladder that converts to chair. Furniture doesn't have to be tiny either. It can be substantial if it is a focal point in the room, and if it is only one of a couple pieces.

Use vertical space to take shelving all the way up the wall. You can build shelving from one wall to another. You can include bench seating/storage under a window. You can curtain off the shelves if it is stuff you don't want displayed.

Mirrors don't always help make a place look bigger when you are decorating. For one thing, if the room gets easily messy, then you are looking at reflected mess as well as real mess. The best way to use mirrors when decorating is to place them where sunlight can be reflected across the room adding more light, a simulated window.

If you are dealing shared small spaces for more than one person, you can make each person's items portable, they take their own things in and out of that room when they are using it and store it in their own space instead of cluttering up that room when they aren't in there. Perfect solution for a hobby space or bathrooms.

one thing that you can do that I did in my daughters room was.... In her room she has two big bookshelves i used them not only for books but i bought a couple of wicker baskets, put them on the shleves of the bookstands and stuck all her toys, dolls in there. Not only does this all hide the clutter but it makes to room look neat and also adds a twist with the baskets.

maybe get some trunks, expandable file envelopes for paperwoek, bills... storage under beds, couches in great plastc bins etc.... i have a small living room and bought a big ottoman and in their I put extra blankets, pillows, books and clutter!

Hope i helped with some ideas!... Happy organizing!

Get rid of everything you don't use, don't plan on using and the stuff that you say your going to use one day. It will work! The stuff you say that your going to use, people never use it!
