authentic decoupage is multiple layesr of laquer with layesr ofpaper inserted between the layers. it takes weeks and entalis putting on a layer of laquer, sanding, another layer, sanding, etc until 6 or 8 layers have built up then a layer of laquer is added and small pieces of paper design are added then another6 or 8 layers of laquer with another layer of thedesign, etc until the whole design seemsto be 3-d floating above the wood surface. itsquite beauriful, but quite delicate. However, a similar evffect can be produced today with a lot less work, spray uruthane, and fewer layers. just spray a layer, gently sand off any bumps and bubbles, spray anothr layer andd repeat until you have a base built up, them stick on your paper, it could be tissueshapes, or a poem written on paper, then add a few more layers of uruthane, itis quicker, because you don't ad as many layers, and the uruthane dries much faster. it can indeed look quite beautiful if you take your time and sand out all the bubbles and bumps.
I've also done a similar effect with tissue paper roses and mod podge, it dries almost as fast and its brush on, so there are more bubbles to sand out.

you can use decoupage or mod podge on anything you wish for example i am using mod podge and different colored tissue paper on mirrors and small clear plates for x-mas gifts. i also used it in my kitchen windows on the bottom half. i took tissue paper and ripped it into different sizes and put the mod podge over it and now it looks similar to stained glass. awesome for kids rooms. you can also use it on cut outs from any magazine or ad and place them on wooden boxes or book marks you name it you can paste it on something and it will dry clear and the pics will be clear and beautiful. good luck and use your imagination=)
