You can use baby oil gel. It's a gel not a liquid, or you can go to your local beauty supply store and find baby products. I use Soft & Precious daily on my nephew and it works great. It smells good too.

I use olive oil once a week. I just apply it to damp hair, cover her head for 5 minuites, and then wash it off with her baby shampoo. another trick is to gently massage the scalp with the baby brush and then wash off the soap. This will get rid of any dead skin. If the baby has cradle cap, this will help, but mask the problem rather than solve it. The best thing is to use SELSUN, NOT selsun BLUE, just selsun shampoo. Apply to hair and leave for 5 mins, then rince the same way. This helped my baby a lot.

You can put olive oil or almond oil. They will make it softer. Dont leave the oil on her head for too long though as to not block the pores. Just for about 15 minutes then wash her hair with a mild shampoo. Also dont wash her hair too often (once a day is enough) coz it might cause dryness as well.

Congratulation on your new baby. From what I have read and from my experience, The oil is not a good idea. Use warm water with a wash cloth to gently clean your baby's hair. Shampoo and soap is not needed this young. also spend some time with a very soft hair brush gently brushing baby's hair will open the hair wall itself to absorbing natural oils. Hope this helps.

What you describe sounds a lot like "cradle cap". Baby oil works wonders.
RE: The poster who cited baby oil suffocation. I would like to stress that although this can happen the oil must be aspirated by the baby. This is why the "keep out of reach of children" warning is on the bottle.

Baby oil works great. Especially if your baby has cradle cap. Just apply it to the baby's head while it's still damp and cover with a cap for 30 minutes. Then the cradle cap combs right out.

DO NOT USE BABY OIIL ON YOUR BABY! IT SUFFOCATES THEM IF IT GETS IN THEIR LUNGS! BABIES DIE EVERY YEAR BECAUSE OF THIS!
My son had craddle cap i used huggies extra sensitive wash it prevernts drying out unlike johnson and johnson and other brands. You can use a tiny spot of baby lotion as well. The dryness went away with a little time.
