It's not dangerous with supervision. As far as cats smothering babies, it can most definitely be true. Those of you with cats know that sometimes cats like to snuggle on your chest and can end up practically on top of your face. They will try to do the same with babies, so make sure never to let the cat in the baby's bedroom.

I don't really like cats, as I am a dog person and do not currently have a cat. I do not think it is dangerous though. All those tales of cats smothering infants because their mouths smell or taste like milk are old wives tales. You may just try to give your cat a little extra attention, so they still feel loved, as their territory has been invaded and by someone noisy. As the baby gets older be sure and not allow the baby or toddler to harm or tease the cat.

The myth that cats have been known to smother babies is exactly that: a myth. You certainly don't have to give up your cat once your baby is born; the only thing I'd suggest is that you supervise your cat around the baby for the first little while, just as you would with any household pet. When I had my son there were 3 cats living in the house; two were my dad's and one was mine. There were never any incidents of the cats threatening my baby's safety or scratching him, and my son grew up learning to love animals and respect them. Actually when my son was only a few weeks old there was a home-care nurse who dropped in for a visit one day, and she expressed concern over a deep red diaper rash that my son had. I'd had him back and forth to the doctor's office over it, various creams and medications used, and nothing was working...it was only getting worse. The nurse took one look at it and informed me in no uncertain terms that my son was allergic to the cats and they had to go, immediately. Of course this wasn't the case at all; I later found out - after more thorough testing by another doctor - that my son was ultra-sensitive to his own urine, and it would burn and irritate him as soon as it contacted his skin. Yet this one nurse decided that the cats were the offenders and had to go. It's funny how people jump to conclusions so quickly over something like that, or tend to cling to old wives' tales about cats (cats smothering babies, or even sucking their breath away), refusing to believe that it simply might not be true. Please don't get rid of your kitty...allow your baby to grow up in a house with a pet, supervise your baby when the cat is in the same room with him or her until your child is a bit older, and teach your baby boundaries around the cat when old enough to start crawling. And if your mom stresses out over the cat's presence, reassure her that there is no danger. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Not under normal conditions. Some say the cat smells the formulas on the babys breath and must watch it. I have never heard of a baby getting sick due to a cat, only if there are allergies involved

Yes and no.I don't think there should be a problem as long as you never leave the baby and the cat alone together. My daughter is around a cat 2-3 times a week and there have never been any problems as a matter of fact she loves animals.

No, it is not dangerous. My father is a veterinarian and we just asked him this very question when our daughter was born. my girlfriend read that the cat hair can cause allergies or lead to choking hazards. But that could not be farther from the truth. Actually, studies show that kids who are exposed to household pets (cats and dogs) are LESS likely to develop allergies to them. Keep the cat around.
