This is a network printer, how are you trying to connect to it?

You need to install the drivers/software from the CD, then when it asks plug the cable from the printers usb port into the computers usb port. then it will find it and complete the install.

**Do not plug the printer in before installing the software**
(your computer may think that your printer is some other kind of device)

GO to the HP site and look for the drivers for the version windows you have. Downoad and install the drivers then reboot and then plug the printer into the computer.

As long as it is compatible with your PC it will work. If the salesperson says it would be a waste of money, it probably is not compatible. They want to sell stuff remember!!! Email Dell support and ask if you don't believe the salesperson.
