The Mikado is, musically, head and shoulders above most of their other work, even if the patter song ("I've got a little list") isn't up to their best example...

...and THAT would be from "Iolanthe":

When you're lying awake with a dismal headache
And repose is tabooed by anxiety,
I conceive you may use any language you choose
To indulge in, without impropriety...

It's soaringly, blindingly WONDERFUL. Even better than Maj. Gen. Stanley's introduction in "The Pirates of Penzance," which is almost as funny with the original lyrics as it is in the version of it that Tom Lehrer used to perform -- in which he sets the periodic table of the elements to the tune of "Modern Major General." One day, I SHALL learn that version of the song... but man, talk about your catalog of ships!

But I'll still stand with "The Mikado" as my overall favorite to listen to. The overture is powerful, comic yet majestic at the same time, and the closing strains at the very end ("With joyous shout and ringing cheer") are as noble and authentic as the lyrics are comic and ridiculous. In spite of the fact that, well, Maj. Gen. Stanley and I are, quite obviously, kindred spirits...

I absolutely LOATHED Gilert and Sullivan until the opera house suckered me into doing HMS Pinafore. After being in one, I have realized that I detest the music, but really have a fun time in it. Yep. I still hate 'em.

The Pirates of Penzance because it's so hilarious. I was in it: 1 month of auditioning, cast meetings, etc.; 4 months of rehearsals and 2 months of shows: even at SEVEN MONTHS of listening to it NONSTOP, I still love it.
