1. As a general rule, I believe people are better able to make decisions for themselves than when decisions are made for them.
2. I also believe people make the best decisions when they know they will have to live with the consequences of their decisions.
3. I believe that because government has so much power in society, it must be kept as limited as is practical to avoid abuse.
4. As a corollary, I think a bad government can destroy people's lives much more often and effectively than a few individuals. So when it is pointed out that somethign bad is happening and the answer is government action, I always wonder, "will this cure be worse than the disease?" and "If government doesn't take action, what will occur."
5. I think the record often demonstrates that well meaning government policies are either horribly inefficient or worse counter-productive to their goal because they too often prevent people from experiencing the natural consequences to their actions, and so don't learn.
6. I think that the actions of millions of individual people will ultimately dwarf anything a government tries. This limits both the effectiveness and the advisability of government programmes.
7. I believe that maximizing liberty is a better course to success for the whole society because it allows it generally to move at the pace of the fastest. Trying to assure eqaulity of outsomes on the other hand tends to make the society move at the speed of the slowest.
8. I think traditional families and people in monogamous heterosexual marriages is the best framework in which children can be raised. I am not saying other models can't be allowed, but I am not convinced they will work as well. Time will tell.
9. I do think that there is such a thing as public morals, and while I respect people's rights to live their lives as they wish, that doesn't mean it is proper to put it out there in public. Whether Britney Spears wears underwear is her business - it should not be anyone else's. That means she should act with some propriety and when she doesn't there should be social pressure on her to not be rude. Not because she doesn't have the right to do what she wants but because her actions show a lack of respect for others. I know the line between oppression and consideration is a thin one, but as a Conservative I would prefer it be moved to the other side of Britney's bits. In these ways, I tend to be traditionalist in my values about sex and marriage, while recognizing that there is an important value in having freedom and diversity. This is your classic half-social Conservative, half-libertarian mix.
10. I believe the standard of living of workers is highest in societies which allow capitalists to use their ideas to develop, rather than central command. An economy which has many individual actors reacts faster to changes in supply, is more efficient, and generates more wealth than one commanded from the center.
11. I believe a group of a million normal people acting as individuals is more to be trusted to find the right answer than if the 10 "smartest" people in that group were to make all the decisions. Where the million are wrong they will find out soon enough and react more effectively when they do - and they will be smarter as a whole next time. Making decisions for them robs them of that chance to learn and tends to elad them to think that if what they do has bad consequences, they should be protected from those consequences by others. This leads to worse and worse decisions.

Small government, less taxes. I have the belief that anyone that is willing to work can achieve the American Dream but I don't believe that lazy people should be given the American dream. In my world performance and persistence are rewarded and not negligence and laziness. I also believe in protecting the unborn and the young from the moral erosion of society. Yes I think that some values should be mandated. I know that people may disagree on the moral issue but why does the law say we cant murder (it is a moral issue).

I would say I am conservative because I love my country. I want to uphold the traditional values that have stood the test of time. I believe in America and that we as a country are good and just. I believe in less government interference and more personal responsibility. I believe we have a duty to protect our country and values from people who would like to see us destroyed. I believe in the family and protecting it from harm. I believe in God. I believe that everyone has the right to be heard and not shouted down because their view is unpopular. I believe we each have a responsibility to protect what our forefathers and fore mothers worked so hard to build. I believe in respecting the flag and what it stands for. I believe in patriotism. Being patriotic is not being jingoistic. Finally, I believe in my heart that the United States of America is an example for the rest of the world.

I am a fiscally-conservative moderate Republican. I believe in the prudent management of capital, of investing in infrastructure and education for long-term strategic success. I believe in honesty in business and politics. I believe in the freedom to succeed, and to enjoy the rewards of success. I believe in self-reliance, but I also believe that everyone has worth and everyone occasionally needs a helping hand. I believe in a strong national defense, and the prudent and logical application of military resources. I believe in investing in scientific research. I believe in free-enterprise but think that there is a place for regulation, because people are not completely honest or fair in their business practices.
I do not believe that there is one true morality, and that government must stay out of issues regarding choice, gender, sexuality, and speech. I do not want anyone dictating to me what my religious or moal position should be, and dont feel I have the right to impose mine on others. I am a patriot to the last.
