Usually a very bad idea.
They are likely to get in one another's way.

.
Anit virus software will conflict with other
software designed to do the same.
Sometimes they even see each other as a "threat"
or as a "virus".
So, it is best you make a choice.

You CAN run the 3 programs I've listed below
because only one of them runs all the time.
The other two you only run, when you want.

I understand, and you want a good anti-virus program.
The solution:
Dowload 3 excellent programs
A. For removing and stopping virus attacks.
B. For removing mal-ware and adware that act as trojans to retrieve informaiton from your computer and your computer habits.
C. Anti-hijacking tool to remove attempts to hijack your home page and other.

A. Get AVAST
1. Remove what you have now! It didn't do right did it? Dump it
2. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete the anti-virus program you have now,
if you have one;
then use your Search feature, type in the name of your current anti-virus program
if you have one > right click and delete any instance it finds.

3. Get this neat free program
Get FREE Home version of an excellent anti-virus software = AVAST
http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html....
Install > run > do a thorough scan
and allow it to run on your computer all the time.
Whatever it finds > selelct DELETE

The annual registration and frequent updates are free too.

B. Get Ad-AWARE spy-removal tool from Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.

C. Get anti-hijacking tool
called HiJack This
for any hijack problems you might encounter Get this FREE anti-Hijack software
1. The program is called HiJackThis 1.99
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
2. Download and run the program
BE CAREFUL what you delete,
from it's findings...because
it will find the offending program
and others that you may NOT want to delete.
Only delete the one that hijacked you.
3. Reset your home page
a. Surf to your homepage of choice
b. In Internet Explorer above click TOOLS > Internet Options > click button USE CURRENT.

In general you should only have one AV program running at a given time, or else they conflict with each other and get confused. I would recommend uninstalling McAfee and leaving Avast!.

"Multiple anti-virus products running on a computer can cause slow performance and/or system compatibility issues such as lockups. Running only one anti-virus solution at a time is recommended."

It's not a good idea to have 2 antivirus programs running at the same time because it may cause conflict and they may let viruses through. You can have more than one antivirus scanner install on your PC but you need to have only one running at a time. You can use the other scanners that are not running to do a on-demand or manual scan but it can't run in the background along with your main scanner.

You need to remove one of those AV programs. More than one AV program will conflict with each other. This conflict will prevent them from providing protection and can cause physical damage to your computer.

AV programs are updated with definitions of known viruses. The definitions have the traits of the virus that distinguish it as a virus. When you have 2 AV's running they see each others definitions, think they are viruses and try to delete each other.

You can and should run more than one Anti-Spyware program for proper protection. AS programs do not conflict.

Not a good idea. Run one and keep it updated. You better not be using this PC for gaming. Even when you turn off AVs to play game, they run files in background, unless you turn them off from taskmanager.

AVG Antivirus
ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall and Antivirus

and add:

CounterSpy
XoftSpy
AdAware

and some alternate firewalls:

Outpost Pro Firewall

Yes it is but my advice - uninstall both of em!. I suggest you download AOL Active Virus Shield, It's based on the popular Kaspersky Lab Virus Killer. It's a great antispyware and virus killer all in one.

There's links and also a great walkthrough with a step by step guide: http://walkthroughwizard.info/
