Our country started with its people taking land from Native Americans as well as trying to wipe them out and fought each other in a civil war. We also had slavery and denied women the right to vote, all occured after our constitutuion was ratified.

But all these things changed within our own democratic system. It took time and there are still repercussions but does that mean true democracy may take many years? Is it fact, as Abraham Lincoln said, that democracy is a government of the people, for the people and by the people and that is what makes building a democracy a slow process?

much longer(if ever), the majority of Iraqis don't see the value in a democratic system, for Americans the desire for democracy was something that was internal, for Iraqis it's being imposed upon them externally

You will never see a true democracy any where the U.S. is a Capitalist Republic that votes... Its a all about the money look at how well all the other country's we tried to change Korea Russia Vietnam and almost all of South America and now where trying for the Middle East what do all of these places have in common there a very poor countries where the money is divided amongst the ones in power.....You wont see a true democracy any more there is no way Money Makes the World go Around and will cause corruption and deceit on the highest levels for a long time to come

To have a democracy, you have to have people who at least agree ideologically with the concept of democracy. The culture of early America and the culture of the Middle East cannot be compared. It isn't even remotely alike. Those people- the Shiites, Sunni's, and at least one other I can't remember the name of right now- have been fighting against each other for thousands of years. Democracy? I'm sure there are those who dream.....
