The unborn:
Life or Tissue?

The Criteria of life
A. Metabolism - Biochemical reactions that occur within an organism
B. Growth- The irreversible increase in size of volume
*growth requires energy. It cannot occur without metabolism
C. Reproduction- the production of offspring
D. Movement- may be rapid or very slow; noticeable or subtle.
* includes movement within cells
E. Response to external stimuli- reacting to some outside force
F. Adaptation- refers to the activity of a population rather than the individual

Does a fetus fit the criteria of life?

~Keep in mind that a fetus is a part of the reproductive cycle... if we discount life on that fact we would have to deny that children before puberty and infertile people are alive.~

sorry for offending some people. I just was continuing a line of questions... that are also in pregnancy. I think the question goes better in biology myself... Curiosity... I am just curious....

Wow!!... out of all the questions I've asked I have received far more hostility about this one than any other.
I just wanted opinions (which I clearly got). I have a sociology degree and was curious how the general yahoo answer population felt about this issue. I was also curious to see how each individual would prove or disprove the criteria of life scenario.
I obviously hit some buttons. I should maybe invent a scale to measure the intensity of the opinions expressed here today.

okay one more clarification

Does the general public consider it murder to kill a cow and eat a hamburger?... duh, no.
Does the general public consider it murder to kill a human? hmmm tough one.

I figured that we all would assume that we are talking about human life... not all life forms...

I think it is rare for someone to change their mind about this issue.

Most people don't even try to talk rationally about it.

By this criteria, killing animals is also murder? If abortion is murder, then a miscarriage would be involuntary manslaughter?

edited to add: Darling, I was trying in a subtle way to point out that you have up the criteria for LIFE not Humanity. Can you point to something on your list and say "that is what makes them human". All you have said is that the is life here. A friend of mine had a tape worm removed, there was life there to.

Well, based on the criteria of life that you provided the unborn could certainly be considered a life. One other thing that I find interesting is that all of those criteria could easily be applied to a common cold virus which we all try to kill or prevent ourselves from getting every winter. Is killing a common cold a cruel and unusual action?

First of all, women have a right to choose what happens to their own bodies!

Secondly, you can discuss whether a fetus qualifies as living, all you want, YOU CAN'T STOP WOMEN FROM GETTING ABORTIONS if that's what they want (even if it's illegal).

And lastly, I don't believe a "living" being (embryo/fetus) requires another living creature (the mom) to survive. Try removing a 5 week old embryo from the womb and see how long it survives! Oh wait a being that requires another to survive is called a PARASITE. Does that mean we should protect tapeworms? Is killing a tapeworm murder? -- A Hindu would think so...so should we legislate that?

STOP YOUR BS and leave us alone you crazy Christian!

i think that it depends on the situation, if someone does it involuntary then i think that she should have the choice to get an abortion, but if she just decides that she doesn't want it any more that is wrong

Whats your question?? How about you keep your opinions to yourself. What do you think your doing? If a young girl is going to have an abortion, you think your post will really matter?

How about this question: Do you believe in freedom?? I certianly do.

I don't believe its right or wrong. I believe it's freedom! A woman has the right to do whatever she wants with her own body!

pro lifers will say life, pro choice will say tissue......

EDIT: why are you asking this in pregnancy? Doesn;t it belong in womens studies or politics, or even the religion section?

when a women has a miscarrige they say they lose a baby. when they abort its tissue? makes no sence. a life is a life from the time the sperm meets the egg as far as im concerned. all those pro-choice hippies should just go to hell.
