I'm looking at a 2000 Jetta gls turbo... anybody know much about these? is 2000 a good/bad year for jettas? is it better to not have the turbo? does that waste gas? all around good car? i love the way it looks but I want to know how it will perform in the long run. Thanks!

i worked in a service department, and all i know is that we saw lots of the 1999-2001 Jettas in for major service issues. they are cheap and readily available at auctions, so we would buy them often from the auction and put on the used car lot...I would check out the kbb.com website for consumer reviews on the Jetta. turbo engines are a little bigger, so theoretically, yes it will use slightly more gas than the regular version.

Jetta's look nice, and are great little cars when they work, but make sure to get the car checked out by a mechanic before you buy one. I bought a new 2001 vr6 back in 2000, and I have had many mechanical problems and barely have 50,000 miles on the car (new transmission, 2 new coil packs, serpentine belt, fan belt/pulley, etc.) Plus the 'check engine' light is on constantly. My advice is to avoid the 2001 models, as everything I've read is that they are nothing but trouble (and as an owner of one, I agree!). Check Consumer Reports for the year that you're thinking of buying, to double check any potential issues. For the most part, though, Jettas are either a great car or a ton of trouble... there isn't much of a middle ground. Good luck!

VWs have their fans, and their detractors.

I have a 89' Golf with 250,000 miles on it. I have a 98 Jetta with 98,000 miles on it. I've had good luck, but part of that is the fact that I do my own work. I defy any rice boy to change their clutch, by themselves, in 3 1/2 hours!!!

A Jetta has always been a good car, like all German cars

Volkswagens are one of the most UNRELIABLE makes of car you can find today. They used to be alot better but they have gone downhill. Stay away. They are overpriced and thier dealerships are known for poor service.

They are horrible cars. My friend has one and has had problems with it ever since she got it. I've three people get them and then sell them a few months later because they encountered problems. VWs are made in Mexico now by the way....
