I have been dealing with extreme lower back pain whenever I go to sleep at night. I'm only able to sleep for like 2 hours and then I have to change sides, I can't lie on my back and sleep, it hurts too much. I do this through out the entire night and its been going on for almost a year now. I went to the doctor and he prescribed a steroid and some muscle relaxers but they don't seem to be doing anything. I am also doing some specific streches and exercises to help. I need some feedback to whether or not to go back to the doctor. Thanks

Ask for a referral for a specialist. It could be a real problem, and waiting doesn't help.

Have you been referred to a Physical Therapist. A PT would examine you to help determine the cause of your symptoms and then develop an plan of treatment to address his findings and help you return to your previous activities and allow you to sleep. You can ask your doctor for a referral or if you are in a state with direct access you can go on your own.

you didn't say how you got the pain. if it was an accident--go to another doctor.

if it wasn't, could be your mattress needs replacing (buy from a store that has a comfort/replacement warranty).

what about your weight--are you too heavy?

do you excercise. could be you just need to strengthen your back muscles.

try a licensed massage therapist first, if you don't have insurance that could be cheaper than a doctor bill.

There could be many things wrong. Best to go back and get a complete evaluation with X-ray or MRI.
