My 1998 Vectra was running fine until one day I started it up and it will not go into 1st or 2nd gear. The car is now stuck in reverse and the gearstick moves freely into the other gear positions .
Any Ideas?

Sound`s like the gear selector linkage has either came off or is worn !
This is a common problem on the f16 / f18 gearboxes that is fitted in the vectra !
If it has came off just push the linkage back on . if it is still connected then the rubber may be worn so pop it off and place some cling film around the ball it clip`s on to . then pop the linkage back on to it !
this is only a " get me home" solution on is not a permanent fix and will need to be sorted out a.s.a.p
Good luck ..................

The gear selector linkage has come apart - i had this happen once in a Fiat van...a bit wierd, I just went to change gear and........nothing.

Not a big deal to fix if the parts have just come undone & not snapped. Tow it to a local garage & they'll fix it.

As it's stuck in reverse...you could tow it with the clutch held in, or get it trailered.

Sounds like your clutch is out or your transmission is bad.
