i was just reading an article in my local newspaper about how our main college wants to add more diveristy to the school by recruting at least a hundred black students, one way they will be choosing applicants is accepting SAT scores that are less then required, now my area is pretty much 50/50 white and black, i don't think this is fair, the school must be getting or looking for money, what do you all think?

no not really fair but unfortunately thats how it works sometimes. even tho minorities deserve the same education as everyone else, it should be earned not given.

I agree. I mean, isn't that an insult to blacks, that the college thinks the only way they can increase the number of black students at the college is to lower their standards? They are assuming that the reason many black people don't get into college is because they aren't smart enough, when really intelligence has little to do with race. This is going to cause a host of problems, one of the biggest being that this is reverse discrimination. It may be about money, but I think it has just as much to do with attention. They want people to think that they are "with the times," and in this way they attract more people to the college. It's sad that a college, of all institutions, would stoop to this level.
Also, estmirabilis makes a good point - inner city schools do not prepare students well enough for the SATs. This is what has to change.

variety is a relative time period. interior the final American inhabitants, you're quite well-known (being gay isn't almost as unique because it replaced into once 10 years in the past). notwithstanding, at an HBCU, you have to be quite unique. variety is not basically constrained to race; tutorial history, own hobbies and different factors can make you different. A philosophy important at MIT resources to the variety of the college, even if that human being sounds like a common MIT student. Being a first-era college student can honestly help you at the same time as it contains scholarships and probably even admissions. do not rigidity the variety perspective. i replaced into talking to an admissions officer the different day and he or she suggested it replaced into very well to have an straightforward life; no longer anybody has triumph over some huge emotional and psychological war through time they're 18.

Good ole' racial quotas.............. Thought those days were long gone.
The reason for this is that the schools do not want to be labeled as "racist" by the ignorant fools of this world. Just the fact that they are willing to accept lower SAT scores tells you they need to fill the quota.
Or maybe their basketball team just sucks..............
And no, its NOT fair.........and just imagine if it was the other way around!!! Hypocritical Sharpton would be there in a flash!!!

DICY!!
What a slippery slope they are on!
Is this a public or private college?
A private college can do whatever if wants (usually) with admissions
Is it a public school? A lot of that is NOT legal
Now I WANT TO SEE EVERYBODY GO TO COLLEGE
expecting crappy public schools, crappy parents, crappy neighborhoods, and 18 years of being baby sat by a TV set is TOO MUCH for anyone to expect from affirmative action
Sound to me like they said this for some free press
I doubt it will amount to any reall change in the student body make-up

Recruiting black people!!!!???? That's not the way to increase diversity. You shouldn't have to recruit anybody. Maybe if your college had International day like mine does every year. You guys could make it public and attract more attention to all kinds of people. Thankfully, my school is quite diverse, not just black or white but all kinds of ethnicities, although white will always remain dominant in this country.

I personally think this is an awful thing, There is such a thing as positive racisim. How can schools encourage White and Black people to be considered equal when others are given special privaliges.

i think its fair because often being black means going to inner city schools that don't adequately prepare students for taking the SAT. i don't think they will benefit monetarily so i don't think money is the motivation here. maybe they want to increase diversity because they feel its important and it will give the school a better profile.

How does accepting SAT scores that are less than required have to do with becoming more diverse? Isn't that saying that minorities are stupid so we have to make it easier for them to get into college? Seems very sad and racist to me.

Why do you spend so much time worried about black people?
Do you think they're just going to walk down the street recruiting random black people to go to college? NO... I'm pretty sure the people they recruit will be people who applied. Their test scores are just a little lower. Which also happens to be kind of normal in urban areas because the schools are not as good, and the standardized tests do not account for that. Maybe they are looking for money. But, I'm for education for all. I wouldn't have a problem if the situation was the same except it was a historically black college recruiting white people.
Its not like they are going to be recruiting gang members or anything like that. They probably have a really good screening process and will make sure the people they do recruit will be deserving of it.
You don't know sh*t about me. And personally I don't give a rats a s s what you think. I defend those who need to be defended against ignorance, PERIOD. I don't love everything black people do. But, I am definitely going to say something if I disagree with something someone says. You asked a question, I gave my opinion. You don't have to like it, or agree with it. But, its not your place to determine whether or not I am "full of crap". YOU seem to have the issue with black people and what black people do, and why they do it. Not me. I'm not posting questions about white people. So, sorry... but YOU are full of crap. Don't expect me to bow down and just agree with whatever you have to say. I don't agree with you... PERIOD. And I don't have to.
