there are a number of different criteria, but basically, we're more or less hard-wired to be atrracted to qualities associated with successful breeding: fertility, health, strength, social viability, etc.

Physical attractiveness -- you'll like a guy who's tall with a square jaw, appears muscular, and doesn't have acne or pox scars. It's just hard-wired.
Girls overcome that hard-wiring a bit, and also like guys who are nice to them.
Guys like any girl who will hold still for about eight minutes. LOL. But we're first attracted by a smooth, rounded face.
