To do it RIGHT, take the numbers off the ENGINE, and order a carb kit (cheap to buy, it has all the gaskets you will need, etc) and take the carb off, apart (screws, everything) and soak the carb (cover it) in a bath type carb cleaner (napa sells some good stuff) overnight... take it out and blow any and all holes out with carb cleaner.... regular out of the can carb cleaner isn't as strong..... and won't have time to clean a tight passage (such as the main jet that feeds it)
Rebuild using the parts from the kit.....
If your new to it, I'd recommend taking pictures along the way.... for a reference.

as a side note.... this gets asked alot and some seem to say this will work...., NOTHING and I repeat nothing added to the gas will clean the carb...

use a fuel stabilizer from now on.... and keep the mower in a dry place....
A new carb will cost considerably more, then repairing this one your self will.....

That depends on how 'gummed up' your carb is. A can of carb cleaner from your local auto parts house may be enough to get it going again.

GO to Wal-Mart and buy some Gum Out or carb cleaner. You just spray it in there and it breaks down all the grime and oil, dirt etc..

Drain gas and gas lines. Remove carb, and spray with carb and choke cleaner. Repeat several times until all 'gummed' gas is removed. Get new carb gasket, and re-attach. fluch tank and lines with cleaner, and reattach. Fill with clean gas, and prime. Start.

The engine is probably a Briggs & Straton or Tecumseh. You can buy a new carb or remove it and use spray Gumout to clean it up with.

STA-BIL IS AVAILABLE AT ANY AUTOMOTIVE STORE
IT PREVENTS THAT SORT OF THING WHEN THE MOWER IS LEFT WITH FUEL IN IT FOR LONG PERIODS
THAT IS ONE BRAND BUT THERE ARE DIFFERENT FUEL STABILIZERS OUT THERE
EASY TO USE JUST POUR IN THE TANK
IF YOU CAN REMOVE THE SEDIMENT BOWL ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CARB IT WILL BE BEST TO CLEAN THAT OUT MANUALLY

Remove the carb, spray it down with carb cleaner until it's clean, then blow it dry to remove residue.
