Latex (in fact all rubber products) dries out over time; think about rubber washers, rubber molding, old latex gloves. This makes far more likely to break, so the expiration date is placed so that you know you're using a condom that will not be dried out. Things like keeping your condoms in hot places (glove compartment, wallet next to your body heat), or very cold places (glove compartment, leaving your purse in the car, etc) can cause a condom to lose its' effecticity even before its' expiration date, so make sure you take care of them as well as making sure they're still good.
Good luck!

The condoms loose the lubrication and break down and friction causes the condom to break. There is supposed to be an expiration date right on the comdom and the box.

Same reason as when you hang rubber bands over a doornob for a time. After about a year they break just by looking at them.

the spermicide does have a shelf life other than that there is no other reason a condom can go bad as long as its kept in a box

If they get too old, then they can dry out and lose their lubrication. I say throw them away after 6 months and buy new ones!
Good Luck

Lubricated or not, over time, condoms will lose their elasticity. Now you wouldn't want one to break "...in action", now, would you?
