Were there territory battles over how big Rhode Island would be?

It depends on where in the country you are. In the early days, boundaries were decided by geographic features (rivers, coastlines, etc.), where treaties with the Natives determined, or were set by English charter. Later on, surveying tended to dominate (hence the large numbers of states with straight line boundaries.

Rhode island was founded by Roger Williams, who was ejected by the Puritans from Massachusetts for having differing religious views and bought land to the south from the Natives and was granted a charter by England. But no real feuding over the size as far as I know.
