USB 2.0 is backward compatible with 1.1 (I am not sure 1.0 made it to the consumer market...). This means any 2.0 device will work with the older 1.1 spec devices. If there are any 1.0 devices, I would guess they are supported too. The newer/faster device will automatically talk at the lower speed to accomodate the slower hardware.
I saw a document that said 1.0 did not support extension cables or simple in-monitor style hubs.
The USB 1.1 spec. has a data rate of 12 Megabits per second. USB 2.0 runs at 480 Megabits per second. You probably don't actually get these speeds because of bus overhead and sharing (if you have more than one device on the bus).
So if you have a USB 1.1 port on your computer it will talk to 2.0 devices, but may not be fast enough to use them if they require the higer data rate of 2.0.
If you have a 2.0 port on your computer, any USB device ought to work (provided there are device drivers for your OS).

I am assuming that you have a USB 1.0 port to which the printer is attached. Some of the new printers will not work on a USB 1.0, but most are cross compatible. What I would recommend is to install a multi USB 2.0 port into your computer. The USB 2.0 is faster connection. If you are able to run XP, your computer should accommodate this upgrade. They are available at Wal-Mart or othe computer stores for about $25 and can easily be installed by taking the cover off the computer, etc.. You may have a bad USB port in your computer - this happens also. I know the Lexmark Z730 prefers if not requires the USB 2.0. I am not familiar with the Z611. I hope this helps.

The only difference between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 is the speed. I have a couple of the Z600 printers that work fine on USB 1.1 from my laptop. So it is not a issue with 1.1 versus 2.0. It is most likely an issue with how they are configured. When you print the request is going into a queue somewhere and simply setting there. It is not going to the printer. It may be going to a different printer instead.
Go into the Start menu and under printers and faxes. Delete all the printers you have there. Then try reinstall one of the Lexmark printers. It should work at that point.

RE:
What's the difference between USB1 and USB2.....?

that won't print. Neither will Z611 printer I had bought before that.
Have Windows XP and dsl line is "ethernet". Any advise would
be helpful. And , yes, its installed, sends every printer request to

Well you can read all the answers here OR viist the Lexmark website and read FAQ's or request tech support. If this is the second printer you have brought that doesn't work I would feel its your PC settings, driver or connection method.

USB 1.0 can operate at 1.5 Megabits per second (Mbps). USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. USB mice and keyboards need only 1.5Mbits/s to function. That performance level is also named 'USB'. USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps, and it is rated 40 times faster than its predecessor interface, USB 1.1, which tops at 12Mbps. Originally, USB 2.0 was intended to go only as fast as 240Mbps, but then, USB 2.0 Promoter Group increased the speed to 480Mbps in October 1999. You can use USB device with USB 1.0, USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 as long as your PC or laptop has USB ports, but USB 2.0 device transfer data at 480 Mbps on systems with USB 2.0 support only.

The difference betweeen the two is the speed.
If you have a USB1.0 and the printer requires USB2.0 you're outa luck, I suggest getting a USB2.0 hub, that should allow you to use your printer, try getting one at Futureshop or Bestbuy

The only difference really between the 2 is the speed that data can travel over the cable.

USB 2.0 is faster but it won't work with USB 1.0 drives, due to size, USB 1.0 drives will plug into the bottom section of USB 2.0 Drives. And yes 2.0 is faster.
