Robust typically means it survives the unexpected well.
If you remember back, Windows 95 gave you the Blue Screen of Death all the time, for even the most minor problems. Windows XP almost never simply dies or hangs for no reason; it gets messed up, but you can almost always at least restart using the Start menu.
That's because Windows XP is more robust than Windows 95.
