Dr. phil. (Doctor philosophiae) is the German equivalent to the American Ph.D. in the humanities.

There is also:

Dr. Ing. (Doktor Ingenieur - Engineering)
Dr. iur. (Doctor iuris - Law)
Dr. med. (Doctor medicinae - Medicine)
Dr. theol. (Doctor theologiae - Theology)
Dr. rer. nat. (Doctor rerum naturalium - literally "Doctor of natural things" - all natural sciences, mathematics and computer science)
Dr. rer. pol. (Doctor rerum politicarum - Economics, Business Administration, Sociology and related subjects)

Notice that only the Engineering doctorate (doktorat) is in German. The rest are in Latin.

Note also that in Germany, people holding these degrees do not address each other as such. I am called "Frau Professor" in Germany. :)

I would think a doctorate from the US would be the same no matter where you went in the world. On the flip-side, the US has many professors from other countries who are still recognized as doctors, depending on their degree and school. If it is a reputable school in the US, it would most likely be recognized in Germany.
