Just use a bottle of dandruff shampoo for 1 or 2 days in a row.
The way it works is, dandruff is actually a bacteria that feeds on your head grease, and dandruff shampoos have a chemical that kills that bacteria. Like sometimes after I don't shower for four days or so, I get dandruff. So then what I do is the next time I shower, I use dandruff shampoo instead of my regular shampoo, and that fixes the problem.
EDIT: Also, dandruff is NOT caused by dry scalp. That is a common misconception.

I have used Selsun, Scalpicin, Neutrogena Tar and Head & Shoulders and it does nothing for my severe dandruff. The best thing I have ever used was prescrition strength Nizoral. I have severe dandruff and this wonderful shampoo cured it in less than a week! Only problem is, you need to get your doctor to prescribe it and it might not be covered by your insurance...

I have heard that apple cider vinegar (soaking your head in it for a few minutes) cures dandruff. I do know that vinegar is an all-purpose fixer upper of many problems, so I would try it.

I've also heard a lot of movie stars with mild dandruff grind up aspirin and pour it into their favorite bottle of shampoo...

I know that dandruff is a bacteria, but I know personally it gets so much worse if I use a shampoo that is too dry, If I wash my hair too little or too much, if the weather is dry or if I get really stressed.

You gotta experiment a little, but try the cheaper options first.

Good luck!

Despite the advertisements, shampoos like Head & Shoulders may appear to take care of the problem, but actually make it worse over time, so you become dependent on it.

Dandruff is caused by a bacteria located in the follicles of your scalp. The only product that can truly rid your scalp of that bacteria for good is a doctor-prescribed shampoo. There is an over-the-counter strength of Nizoral, but it only helps very mild cases, or is used to maintain the scalp after a session of the physician-prescribed strength medicated shampoo. Only a dermatologist can determine what's right for your scalp, since many people think their dry, flaky scalp is dandruff.

We can't just rely on one shampoo, different people get relief with different shampoos depending upon the cause and severity of dandruff. The only best solution is :

Apply Neem paste, mixing the neem powder with one tspn lemon or curd and water to make it as a paste.Let it soak for a few minutes. Apply on the scalp with a brush and wait for 20-30 mins and just rinse your hair. Remember not to shampoo/condition your hair after rinsing, do not apply anything on your hair for one day. This is because even after it is rinsed it still works on the dandruff.

For better results, apply it the next day after shampooing your hair. You can get this powder in any of the Indian stores...

Believe me,you would get rid of dandruff for sure if you do this at least twice a month, no matter whether you have dry or oily scalp and with no side effects.

Your problem is probably using the "same" shampoo for a very long time...

You need to switch shampoos once or twice a week, so that your scalp doesn't get used to the same chemicals and dries it out...

Use some head & shoulders and alternate every other day for a week until it clears up then alternat every three days with anything else that makes you smile and pleases your senses...because it may be the perfumes that may be drying out your scalp...

I wish you well..

there are several reasons to why you get dandruff - it's drying of the scalp - so depending on the severity you should try one of the otc shampoos (they're several and most are affective).. If you have it all the time - worth a trip to a specialist and get a prescription....

I asked this same Q here about 2 wks ago.The answer I picked sounded weird, but I SWEAR it worked!!!! Get a spray bottle and but plain wite vinegar in it. spray directly onto the scalp and let it sit for at least 30 min. Then you wash it (I have to wash it real good a few times to make sure the smell is gone), and condition it like you normally would. I really noticed the difference after the 2nd time doing it. Like I said, it sounds odd (and smells terrible), but IT WORKS!!!!!!!!
