It was written as a tribute to Buddy Holley, the Big Bopper, and Ritchie V. It wasn't necessarily about the crash, but about the effects the crash had on the music of the time -- forever lost.

Previous posters are correct, three of the biggest stars in Rock n Roll at that time were in a plane crash that killed them.
