Rofecoxib (Vioxx) is no longer available in the United States although its withdrawal was more of a legal concern than a medical concern. A related drug Valdecoxib (Bextra) was withdrawn for a different reason. Celecoxib (Celebrex) is still available although it is such a close structural relative of valdecoxib (in fact produced by the same company) that if one were truly bad the other would have been withdrawn as well. In the case of rofecoxib the concern was the possibility of an increase in thromboembolic events such as stroke and heart attack. There is absolutely no theoretical basis to how such events would occur. In addition the same study cited other drugs such as naproxen as having the same risk although that drug remains available as both a prescription and an over the counter drug. All of this suggests that rofecoxib was not really a conern and yet there are still attorneys advertising that if you have ever taken the drug to call an 800 # and join in a class action lawsuit. The problem with such lawsuits is that even if you are fine and have never had any problems or side effects the attorney receives more money (with more names in the suit) and will pass some (but very little) of that along to you. The above 3 medications belong to a class of nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) referred to as COX2 (cyclooxygenase) inhibitors. These are advertised as being advantageous but in fact they are not. There are plenty of other NSAIDs both prescription and over the counter and I avoid COX2s not out of concern but rather as they (or now only celecoxib) are very expensive. All NSAIDs share similar side effects the most common being gastrointestinal misery but most people will experience no problems at all.

I work in a pharmacy and have not seen a script for it so doctors are no longer prescribing it. You can get alot of info if you sign on to WebMd.com or if your pharmacy has a website of its own like www.walgreens.com and you can pull up the drug and it will list its side effects. Hope this helps
