I was sent an email today and I am almost certain that it is not true, but I wanted to know what you thought.
It said that if you are forced to withdraw cash from a machine against your will, if you enter you pin number in reverse, the police will be notified. You can still withdraw cash, but the police are instantly dispatched.
Has anyone else heard anything like this?

(Sorry I had no idea what category this would come under!!)

I'm afraid that is utter fantasy! If you do get held up at an ATM then it is best to comply with their demands to avoid you getting injured. For a better chance of the attacker being identified most ATMs are fitted with cameras (the 2 little holes to the right of the screen) and, according to recent statistics, 90% of ATMs in the UK are covered by CCTV cameras so try to keep your attacker there for a while, if you can so that the camera can get a good picture of them.

hutches3 is correct. I didn't believe it either, so I went to Snopes.com, as she advised, entered "atm withdrawals" and got the straight story. Entering your PIN in reverse will do nothing but increase your danger. Now I'm armed and ready with something other than my own opinion if someone tries to convince me of this in the future.

Check where the Email came from, and if possible, print a copy and take it to your local police station.

They will be just as interested as I am. Looks like some new way for people to get your pin number and account details.

Well, I think the whole idea is disproved when the machine lets you have cash after putting your PIN in BACKWARDS. Sounds like an urban legend to me...

Yes I heard that too, thought I may try it for a laugh, or as an experiment in the name of social science

I've heard this also. I've never tried it. I think that if it works you would be fined for a false alarm if it is indeed just an experiment. Somebody somewhere is bound to give it a shot.

I haven't ever heard that. That would be a really good thing for them to have though! Call your local PD and ask them on the non-emergency line.

No, I can't say I've ever heard of anything like that. But these days I wouldn't be surprised at anything happening.
