Africa is a place of diverse landscapes. The city-states that were near the eastern coast were able to establish trade with other peoples (if memory serves, they traded first with the Arabic peoples and then later with China). They were able to trade amongst themselves, but they also fought to become the most powerful trade city. Little is known about early civilizations from the rest of Africa because travel was very difficult there - mountains, desert, jungle - and the peoples from the non-eastern coast kept no written history until relatively recently.

Hope this helps.

During which period? To most people Africa, is like one big country with little variation. That is in fact not true.

In the West, we have ancient civilizations in countries such as Mali and Ghana. In the North, we have even greater diversity with people who are predominantly Cushites and of Arab descent.

In the East and South is bantustan territory but even among them there are difefrences in language and custom.....
