I have never been outside the USA, but I would really like to visit the Rio Carnival.

However, although my boyfriend speaks a little Spanish I know that they don't speak that in Brazil.

So is Brazilian similar to Spanish, or will my boyfriend and me struggle to be understood ?

Brazilians speak Portuguese. Surely you will encounter some people who speak some Spanish, but I wouldn´t count on it. I´d say that English would be better to use (almost everyone in the touristy areas speak English), as it more widely taught since its the international language.

Just in case, buy a Portuguese phrasebook. Try to get it in Brazilian Portuguese, as regular Portuguese is not necessarily the same.

Although Portuguese seems like Spanish, you will not have a hard time if you just speak in English. In my opinion, it will be a lot easier for you and for them.
A lot of Brazilians speak English and they prefer to speak English rather than speak Spanish.
