Nope they cannot monitor your msn please note the goverment cannot monitor your msn due to several reasons. Firstly the computer network has a personal history logged on your computer it is in your history. However the govevernment do not have a device that can read encrytpted codes from anyones p.c but they can obtain this only if they pay you a visit and open your hard drive. They cannot keep track of your computer when talking to a freind etc, But they can keep track of your activities if you log on to the goverment department website as this is within their realm they can look at what you are doing when you enter their website. But if your using your own p.c the goverment has no control over the world wide web this is why negative externalities exist if the goverment like chinise government do were able to monitor it all these website such as terrorism etc etc would be closed down. Overall your question based on can the goverment monitor you using msn chat the fact is they CANNOT only if you were guilty of a crime and they arrive at your house got all the evidence signed DATA PROTECTION ACT then they would be able to look up your history and analyse your activities on msn apart from that they cant hope this helps thank you
p.s these is a factual answer

Hmmm well consider anyone in the street, with the correct scanner, can listen in to your mobile phone conversations, infect your pc with a programme that records every keystroke you make and even take over you PC for their own use. I dont think you need worry too much about the Government monitoring your MSN chats, Unless of course you give them a reason.

The Agencies and Departments of the Government can't get information from each other.
Don't believe what you see on TV and Movies. That is pure Hollywoood make believe. The Government does not have that capabality(or anything close to it) of information gathering.
There are lots of Conspiracy Kooks in this world. If you start believing them you will soon start wearing a TIN-FOIL hat and seeing Black Helicopters flying over your house at night.

Yes, it's true, but they are unlikely to bother you. They have a huge listening station (as they call it) in Cheltenham (GCHQ) which automatically monitors all email and mobile phone traffic in and out of UK. The computers are searching for key words (in all languages) which are alarm triggers. Words like 'explosives', 'kill', etc. Also words which relate to drugs and money laundering, but they are only bothered to look more closely if there is a regular pattern to the messages from the same sources time after time. Incoming bags of mail from places such as the Caribbean and South and Central America is 'red tagged' as suspect (automatically!!) at sorting offices and left to one side to be examined by Customs Officers. It's for your own good!

No government has the time or resource to monitor every individual. Surveillance is target specific. Keep your nose clean and you won't have any problems and last fridays conquest will not appear in this weekends News of the World.

From the very beginning, Microsoft, and other Operating Systems have worked with the government to
catch real life SPYs against the government.
It is said that MS left INTENTIONAL holes in the back door of security, so that if you ever type into email or search engines key words like bom b,
or pres ident,
or other key words they think are significant
and if an email leaves the country to overseas
(probably to specific addresses)
that a copy or an alert will automatically be sent to NASA
or other anti-spy government agencies.
Years ago, operators also randomly listened in on telephone conversations for key words.
Now, days, there is technology that someone can sit in a vehicle outside your house and have equipment sensitive enough to listen to you conversations.
And it has been done, true.
So don't get your self in a tiz. Anti-spy techniques have been going on in this country and around the world for ages. And be glad that they do...because you have excellent FREEDOMS because they catch the one's that want to corrupt your freedom.
If your country is listening in, they don't give a hoot about your secrets, who you hate, who you love, your tawdy sex life, or your religious plans...they only care if you mean to harm our government in some way.
If you don't want someone else to know your personal buisness...then don't talk about it to anyone.
In our home town, if I tell something to ONE particular person, the next day 50 other people know it too.
Relax...live your life, don't be paranoid, and
be glad for your freedom to disuss what ever you want with whom ever you want...freely....
even if someone else might be listening.

Why is that terrible? Are you planning on typing a bunch of covert messages that you don't want the government to see? Unless you are on a watchdog list the government rarely bothers with the every day citizen. But as part of a disclaimer of the internet....if you put it out there you have no expectation of privacy...that's just how it goes.

They can but not in the way you're thinking. They don't have some special button or device that allows them to do it. If they wanted to monitor your conversation they'd just ask Microsoft to do it.
Pre-Patriot Act they'd need to get an okay from a judge. Now, not so much. :D

Course they do. They have machines that "listen" for keywords, like bomb, terrorism etc Your isp is a public company and the government can do what they like. They don't log all conversations as there are trillions, but the machines alert them to potentially dangerous ones. Remember nothing you do on the net is hidden.

I know that the US governemnt wants to do it. US govt is known to have pressurised many online companies to share user info. Companies have faught legal wars over it. At one time, US govt went to computer manufacturers with a plan to put hidden micro processer on the motherboard to steal information.
Since we dont hear anything about it now, I suppose the US govt. has found some way to spy on everyone.
