Because:
It encourages consumption (think of all the tickets, advertising and merchandising that takes place around it).
It is probably the one thing that still isn't totally predictable, hence it is entertaining and exciting.
And it sure beats talking about anything important. Guys can talk for hours and hours about their favourite sport and say absolutely nothing. Its a safe topic for conversation.

First of all , why paint all americans with the same broad brush. I actually know many Americans who could care less about "sport."
I don't believe that anyone on this site could speak for, or represent ,
'the Americans". I, like many people, "adore" only certain sports.
The reasons are too numerous to list here, but mentioning just a few : I suppose it's a form of entertainment, It brings people together for a common cause, It's inspiring for some. And, of course, you can wager on sports.

It's a way to be active, to spend some time off of stressful living and enjoying a good sport watching or a good outdoor activity.

compensation for a lack of anything worthwhile in daily living?
somehow this is remedied by living vicariously through sports figures or teams,
and something about the sense of bonding with people that all wear the same colour uniforms.

It's just another way to compete and dominate. . . something most humans (males anyway) are naturally drawn to, but express in different ways based on culture.

Otherwise, they would just have baseball (which the English invented).
