AVG Free Antivirus, I use it, it's robust, non-invasive, easy to use and configure, and FREE.

The big thing is that you HAVE to update it daily. This isn't a problem if your internet connection is always on, if you have dial-up, you'll have to be more vigilant.

Also, start using Mozilla Firefox for internet browsing, or update Internet Explorer to version 7.

As for spyware, try Ad-aware, available from download.com, and try and run scans weekly.
