All ultrasound is thought to be safe in pregnancy, but it depends on the power used. The higher power and the longer duration of the scan, the more likely it is to be unsafe. As far as we know, regular ultrasound is safe, as the power it uses is very low. However, 3d ultrasound actually exposes the baby to more ultrasound waves, and therefore MAY theoretically not be as safe as regular ultrasound. An expert at ultrasound would argue that in the hands of an expert, it will only be exposing the fetus to a short period of time. And the pictures that you get from a 3d ultrasound are truly amazing. But at the end of the day, the safety figures that are quoted for ultrasound and its long safety record, is based on the low strength ultrasounds that have been used for many years. The truth is, no one can guarantee 100% that a 3d scan is safe. Check out this site for more information on ultrasound. http://www.askquestions.org/articles/ultrasound/

When ultrasounds are conductive for medical diagnosis they are relatively safe. They use the lowest settings and the least amount of time possible.
When ultrasounds are preformed for amusement they use higher settings to get better images, session frequently last 30 minutes or even an hour. There is evidence that they are not safe. Ultrasounds cause bubbles to form in the amniotic fluid, no one knows what effects this has. Ultrasounds also cause the amniotic fluid to heat up (that is why they use ultrasounds to treat muscle injuries). There is also evidence that even though ultrasounds use sound waves above human hearing after they are reflected in the uterus they become audible to the fetus, and it is not pleasant. It is as loud as a subway when you are standing at the platform. There is evidence that frequent ultrasounds contribute to low birth weight.
Not to mention "keepsake" ultrasounds are not preformed by qualified medical technicians. The FDA recommends against keepsake ultrasounds and is working to ban them.
Personally I wouldn't get one, but I didn't get any during pregnancy and I wouldn't without a specific medical concern. However this is a decision you and your wife need to make together. I will add some links as I find them.

Any device that uses electricity has radiation. However, most do not give off enough to cause any harm what so ever. The 3D and 4D sonograms are still new so there is always a risk factor. The hospital that I am currently going through trys their best to make sure that the woman atleast get one of these types of sonograms. The sonogram is being done by profesionals and is not considered harmful. As long as you get the sonogram done by a professional your wife and the baby will be fine. But if you really want an answer you can trust, always ask her doctor. Her doctor will let you know if what you intend on doing is at all harmful. Hope that this answer helps.

I have 3D ultersound pictures from my son and they are incredible!!!!!! The details are AMAZING!!! In the ultersound itself we could see the details so well, down to the hairs on his face. It Was AWESOME!! The Doctor was able to look more closely too at his heart, and other organs that they could not do with a regular "old style" altersound. The pictures I have I went and got enlarged and have them framed. A couple of them are so neat ...you can see the facial detail and all. There was no dount that he was a boy as well...LOL Good luck and have fun with it. If you decide to do this. I know you will love it! I was 5 months along when we had ours done.

A sonogram uses no radiation. Merely sound waves that bounce off of the baby and her insides presenting the picture.
