I work 7-8 hour shifts and I noticed last week that my legs to my toes were swollen like 4 times their normal size. I have not had any swelling prior to this and I am a naturally thin person (5'10" and 118 lbs. prior to pregnancy). I weigh 144 pounds now, all baby though. It scared me to have that much swelling. It's mostly in my right leg. I have some swelling in my left leg and foot but not nearly as much as in my right leg. My hands swelled and I couldn't put on my engagement ring on Saturday either. Is this normal or is this something I should be concerned about? It's just the fact that I've never had any swelling prior to this week. Currently, my legs are still swollen. I have my next doctor's appointment one week from today. Should I be concerned or just wait and ask my doctor next week?

IT is typical to have swelling, but if you are worried call and talk to the nurse or doctor they will tell you if they think you need to come in...
My second pregnancy I had a lot of swelling all at once and towards the end... these are the things the doc told me to do:

-cut out as much salt as possible
-drink as much water as possible, no sports drinks they are loaded with sodium
-proper your feet up as much as possible
-soak your feet, I took tubs so I at least had my feet level with my legs
-make sure whatever shoes you are wearing you get really good support

Again though, no one on here should substitute for your OBG and, if you are concerned maybe you should call him/her

GOOD LUCK!

Have a GREAT day!

Like everyone says, you should always put your mind at ease and if that means checking with your doc, you should. I will tell you that they do check you for preeclampsia at every appointment by checking the proteins in the urine. I am a stay at home mom and while my duties do include the normal cooking, cleaning, shopping and etc. I do not stand as much as you do. If i do stand for long periods of time, like Thanksgiving or Christmas shopping I do swell. My hands are always swollen and generally it is just my right foot, ankle and calf that swell. Weird why only one. But I'm not concerned. Watch your face. If your face starts to swell, eapecially your eyes. If your eyes get puffy and swollen then you might be more concerned. Congrats and good luck. Oh, btw, I'm due Jan. 15. it's my third child.

Although swelling is a pregnancy symptom it is also a sign of something very serious like pre-eclampsia (which I had and was induced right away) when you swell up all of a sudden there may be a problem,I say go to the doctor now and not wait til the actual appt. They will test your blood pressure and check if you have protein in your urine. I say go NOW your baby's life depends on it, it's better to know for sure then to just wait and worry til your appt.

Warning signs...
Headaches that are not relieved with Tylenol
Seeing spots/ blurred vision
Severe swelling of hands and face
protein in urine
high blood pressure.

I had sudden swelling of my feet one night and didn't think much of it since I had been having severe swelling for weeks. (I also had blood pressure problems for weeks.) The next day I went to the doctor because I just had a feeling things were wrong. They took my blood pressure and it was 158/123. I could have had seizures or gone into a coma. You know your body. If it doesn't seem right go get it checked. Please call the doctor and get it checked. I was glad I did.

My sister had this problem in the last few weeks of her pregnancy and they said that she was developing preeclampsia. Try drinking a lot of water and staying off your feet. Ask your boss if you can sit on a stool or a chair behind the counter and try to keep your legs up. It's definately something you should ask your doctor about, and you might want to just call him/her to make sure that they don't want you to come in early.

It could be just normal pregnancy swelling but if I were you I would call the doctor and move up your appointment because that is also one of the first signs of preeclampsia.

hi!Do you have a lot of salt in your diet? I know that towards the end of pregnancy they tell you to cut salt out as much as possible as it makes you retain water and swell...try limiting your salt but to be on the safe side i would just put a call into your obgyn/ talk to the nurse or leave a ? with her mine always calls me back...just to be on the safe side that its nothing bad...but it is normal to swell some. Im 25 weeks along so good luck to you!

If i was you I would call your doctor if only to make yourself feel better. It could be many things. Its possible that its just from standing so long but it also could be high blood pressure or a number of other things. Its best for you and the baby's sake to call your doctor and see if he thinks it can wait a week or if you should come in sooner.

You need to call your doctor and tell them. If you swelled up 4 times the normal size in your legs, it sounds like you have preeclampsia. Call your doctor ASAP, they will see you.

When I was pregnant I had the same problem. I called my doctor though so he could check my blood pressure. If you have a way to I would get your blood pressure checked. It sounds like it could be preeclampsia. I would atleast call the doctor and get his/her opinion. Just to be sure.
