If in a crowd somebody says "phhhhhhsssshhhtttt", why do everybody look in that direction, knowing they were not named "phhhhhhsssshhhttt". Thanks.

maybe they want to see what would make a person make such a noise. if all they see is you, they'll know you're nuts.

How many times have you forgotten someones name and yelled out 'Hi' or 'Hey' or 'Hey stranger' and have other people around you look as well. Even though their names aren't Hi or hey or Stranger...

To see who is hushing who. The same reason, when someone is yelling out their daughters name, "SANDY!!!" everyone turns to see who yelled out the name and who sandy is.

We respond to stimuli. If we need more info regarding a certain stimuli (i.e. who are they psht-ing), we will investigate (i.e. turn toward the sound).
