It is a rating system that originated with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Both were film critics for Chicago Newspapers.
Thumbs up = good movie
Thumbs down = bad movie
Two thumbs up means real good movie.

Two movie critics (Siskel & Ebert) used thumbs up and thumbs down to rate movies. A thumbs up is a good review... thumbs down a bad. If they both gave the movie good reviews, it would be "two thumbs up".
However, Gene Siskel passed away... now it's Ebert & Roper.

It used to be because of the famous film critics Siskel and Ebert, but siskel died. So now "two thumbs up" refers to Ebert and Roeper. Thumbs up = good. Thumbs down = bad.
