We have a wireless router in our house that allows two computers and my laptop to be connected to internet (broadband). We have Windows XP. Our main computer is a recent e-machine.. the printer is an HP 1350 All-In-One printer/scanner/copier USB connected to our desk computer. What is a wireless print server? Maybe that's my 'missing link'?

A printer server is a special port on a router that allows you to attach a printer to the router, rather than to a computer. Then any computer on the network can print to that printer. Unless you paid extra for the feature, it is not included with your router.

What you can do is attach the printer to the desktop computer. Then you can go into the properties for the printer and turn on print sharing. This will allow the laptop to print by sending the print job through the router to the desktop. The desktop then sends the job on to the printer. It is all automatic, nobody has to click anything on the desktop to make it print.

One the print sharing has been turned on, you go into Network Neighbor and find the laptop. Click on its icon and it will open so you can see the printer (and anything else they have shared). Double click the printer's icon and it will install add the desktop's printer to you list of available printer. Simply select it (or set it as default) when you want to print.

Oh, the desktop will have to be TURNED ON for the latop to be able to print.

A wireless print server would allow the printer to be shared to any computer on the network without having to be physically connected to a computer. This would come in handy if you wanted the printer in a room without a computer dedicated to that room.

Just share the printer on your desk computer. Go into printer setup and click on Sharing.
